Living With Parents – Part Deux
It’s been a while since I’ve lived with my parents; 12 years in fact. When I was 14 my Mum divorced my Dad, so I stayed with Dad (in agreement with Mum) and that was that for another 7 years. I then met my now soon-to-be-ex wife at 21, got our own rented place and did the whole “Wee! I’m free!” thing for a few years. Life was different. I was now responsible for these odd things called “bills”, and a new experience for me of having no money ever, as it turns out the wife was a compulsive gambler and was continuously overdrawn and dragged me with her.
After 3 years of this I said enough was enough. She wanted a divorce for her own mystical reasons and I was only too happy to oblige by that stage. I did wonder where the hell I was going to go, though. I still needed a roof over my head and I wasn’t happy about taking on the place we were living at alone. I was worried about trying to live on my own with no cash and some sizable debt courtesy of her. Mum without a hint of hesitation said I should move in with her. I was thrilled, as I’d never actually ‘lived’ with my Mum since she left my Dad all those years ago. I knew my step-Dad wasn’t 100% on the idea, but we live in an agreeable ceasefire. It’s not he doesn’t like me, it’s just he has been used to it just being the two of them for the last so many years so to suddenly have “a child” under the roof again is taking some adjustment. I don’t blame him, but I try and keep myself to myself. I buy my own food, do my own cooking, help out with the chores and generally try to be as unintrusive as possible.
The really great thing is, it has slashed my day-to-day living costs. I’m no longer paying out £1,000+ a month to maintain rented accomodation and all associated utilities. This means I have been able to get my car serviced (it was well overdue), go on holiday to try and just relax and get myself back to normal, and I am now saving what I am not spending with a view to becoming debt free by New Years Day. That is my goal, and I hope to achieve it. Once I’ve hit that spot in my life, I’m going to begin saving heavily for a deposit on my Avia
. It turns out I have a pre-approved favourable mortgage deal with Barclays sitting on my account, so when the time comes I fully intend to pursue that avenue and see where it takes me.
Life is fun again, so thank you, Mum. My savior.

That is a wonderful story to share. Moms are great. My mom has helped me so much in my life too. Happy (early) Mother’s Day to your fantastic mom. Give her a hug for me!
