Backup Strategy – Part 2
My mother just asked me what I wanted for my birthday and as you’ll know from an earlier post, I’m somewhat obsessed with backing up. The one thing missing from my backup strategy is an external RAID-protected hard drive so I said I’d be rather grateful if she could fill this gap. With a sly grin she said go pick one and she’ll pay for it.
It’s a topic I’ve done much research on, and not wanting to break her bank entirely this month, I opted for a highly rated, Direct Attached Storage option: the Western Digital 2TB My Book Mirror Edition.
2x 1TB hard drives in a RAID-1 mirror arrangement. If one hard drive fails, the other one keeps on ticking. Remove the dud, slide in a new one and it automatically rebuilds the other drive back to 2 drive safety. Lovely stuff. Thanks mum!!!
It also means my new-found job of recovering data for friends who don’t have a decent backup strategy (see the post below) will become far easier, as I’ll have somewhere to store mirror-images of their drives to work on rather than using the live drive, which can just cause more data loss. Bonus.

Very nice. I drooled a little bit just now.
