		<description>I use the wp-super-cache plugin(http://ocaoimh.ie/wp-super-cache/) for caching in my &lt;a href=&quot;http://realaberdeen.info&quot; rel=&quot;nofollow&quot;&gt;realaberdeen&lt;/a&gt; site (actually I think I also put it on my blog now that I think of it) which has legacy wp-cache support in it, might be worth taking a look at that too.

I also use the optimize DB plugin(http://yoast.com/wordpress/optimize-db/) to tidy up the DB automatically for me and save me from having to do anything in mysql directly.
