The PC Fixer – Update

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Since my last post on the subject, SpinRite has done about all it can do on this poor excuse for a hard drive. It has managed to salvage an awful lot of what would have otherwise been damaged beyond recovery. There were so many borderline “is it a one or a zero?” sectors I got [...]

Backup Strategy – Part 2

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

My mother just asked me what I wanted for my birthday and as you’ll know from an earlier post, I’m somewhat obsessed with backing up. The one thing missing from my backup strategy is an external RAID-protected hard drive so I said I’d be rather grateful if she could fill this gap. With a sly [...]

The PC Fixer

Monday, May 11th, 2009

I seem to have acquired a reputation at work for being able to work miracles. In the space of 3 days I’ve picked up 2 dead PC’s from 2 different friends. Both are non-booters, and both quite new.
The first one I’ve ‘fixed’ already – by taking the graphics card out and using the onboard VGA [...]

Recovery Disks

Friday, May 8th, 2009

It seems the days when computers came with proper CD’s of full operating systems for use should a hard drive crash or be upgraded, are long behind us. In fact the last time I remember that happening were around about Windows 95. 14 years ago. Shocking.
I’m using Mum’s PC as my primary workspace at the [...]

WordPress for iPhone

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

I don’t own an iphone but I do have an iPod touch, which is basically the iPhone sans camera and phone. I found just now the wordpress app in the AppStore. Free!
So I can now blog away from the PC. Brilliant!

PC Backup Strategies

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Have you ever stopped for just a moment and considered how much of your life is stored digitally on your hard drive in that beige box of yours? Go on, take a moment now… Family photos? Holiday videos? Work reports? Personal diary? Digital media (iTunes and the like)?
These are just a few examples of “stuff” [...]

My VoIP Phone Arrived Today!

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

And lo, how dreadfully disappointed was I to find that whilst the handset works fine, the base station and/or its power supply doesn’t even power up.
I’ve sent an email to the supplier, but my hopes of being fully VoIP’ed by the end of the day have been dashed. What a complete waste [...]

Making VoIP Work for You

Monday, April 20th, 2009

I’ve recently jumped on the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) wagon, and what fun it is! My reasons range from the mundane, i.e. did you know your credit score with some companies is higher if you give them a land line number than a mobile?), to exotic: I wanted to be able to have various [...]
